Toquerville is a small desert community in eastern Washington County, population around 2,000, nestled in the red-rock landscape between Hurricane and St. George. The town was established in 1858 and built its early economy on agriculture, silver processing at Silver Reef, and a winery that sent wine throughout the West. Today, the community's setting between Zion National Park and the greater St. George area has created a tourism economy while maintaining its quiet character. For the roughly 310 Medicare residents here, the challenge is distance to major hospital services. St. George Regional Hospital is 20 miles south, and the newer Hurricane Emergency Campus is 10 miles south. Medical care requires planning for a short drive.
