Book a 20-Minute ReviewIf you live in Utah and need help paying for your Medicare Part B premium, you may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program (MSP). This program is designed to assist people with low income and limited resources by covering some or all of their premiums and other out-of-pocket costs. Here’s what you should know about MSPs in Utah.
An MSP can cover several parts of your Medicare expenses, including:
Monthly premiums for Part B
Annual deductibles
Coinsurance payments
Copayments
The exact amount that the program covers depends on which type of MSP you qualify for. There are four types of MSPs in Utah: Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB), Qualifying Individual (QI), and Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI). Each has different eligibility requirements.
To be eligible for an MSP, you must meet specific income and resource limits. These vary depending on the type of program:
Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): This covers your Part B premiums as well as deductibles and coinsurance. You can qualify if your monthly income is less than 100% of the federal poverty level (FPL) and you have limited resources.
Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): This only covers your Part B premium. To be eligible, your income must be below or equal to 120% of the FPL.
Qualifying Individual (QI): Similar to SLMB, this program also covers your Part B premium but has a higher income limit—up to 135% of the FPL.
Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI): This covers deductibles and coinsurance for people under age 65 who are disabled and working. Income limits vary based on family size.
